Our Behind The Print series gives you an intimate look at our artists' design process. You’ll meet the artists who creates the prints and learn what inspires them to create. Who's up next? Meet Hannah Owen, the incredible artist from Gather No Moss who created the Jungle Bells print.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I’m Hannah Owen, a surface pattern designer and illustrator. I have been working with Gather No Moss print studio for over seven years creating cute and quirky baby, kids and mens designs. Our designs can be seen all over High Street! My background has always been in design—once I started studying Illustration, I never looked back. I live and work at home in Letchworth, Hertfordshire in the UK.

Q: What about your source of inspiration as an artist?

My inspiration comes from all kinds of places. When sourcing new trends and colour inspiration, I use Pinterest, blogs and interior trends to collect colour, shape, and texture as a starting point. I love using animals in my designs as they provide so much character and interest.

Q: What was your inspiration for the Jungle Bells print?

Christmas is such a fun and enjoyable time when friends and family gather together. The ‘Christmas jumper (sweater) trend’ has grown in recent years and I wanted to capture this through my design with a bit of festive cheer.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your design process?

I start by sourcing images I think will work for a specific print. For Jungle Bells, I found some jungle animals which I thought create a nice twist on 'classic' Christmas animals. After these were sourced, I hand drew the outfits on them.

Q: How does it make you feel to know this print is out existing as living art in the world? What feelings or emotions do you hope this print evokes?

I love seeing my designs out in the wild! The feeling never gets old. I love the thought of families gathering ‘round a fire at Christmas sporting their new Jungle Bells outfit.

Q: Tell us a bit more about yourself – a few fun facts, perhaps?

When I’m not illustrating I love to explore the countryside where we live. It gives me so much inspiration to be outside in nature. I also spend a large amount of time watching house renovation programmes as we are currently renovating our home—any excuse to get out the paintbrush!
